How does the stylus pen for a tablet PC work?
The pen for my tablet PC unexpectedly died, and gateway was kind enough to send me another one to replace it. Unfortunately, that one was dead on arrival, and now they're sending me yet another one. I'm very curious by this technology and why/how they can just randomly not work.... it seems very finicky, no? What is it that 'dies' in the pen to make it no longer work? A weak signal perhaps, or is it more like a hotel room key card that becomes useless after staying in the same pocket as a cell phone? And is there any way I can 'recharge' these dead pens to make them work again? I'm beginning to have quite the collection....
One way that it can work - the screen is a pair of condictive materials separated by an insulator. Pressing on the screen compresses/thins the insulator, allowing electricitity to pass between the 2 layers. There are sensors tha can tell WHERE on the screen the change in conductivity occurs. In those cases, the stylus would not be the problem, it would just be a sharp piece of plastic. The problem would be something in the way the screen senses where the thinned insulator is.
But I'm not saying that that is how your system works - just how A system works.
